The first step is not necessary

The first step is not necessary, but it may make your spreadsheet more attractive. First, enter Ctrl-A to select all the cells. This darkens all the cells except A1.

Then click on Format, to bring down the menu you see above, and then on Cells, to bring down the menu you see on the next page.
